Research cutoff: · Updated:A network, a service, and a historical landscape
A railway can be understood through several different questions: where its tracks run, what trains use them, how much traffic they carry, and what buildings and engineering works survive from earlier periods. These perspectives are complementary, but their evidence is different. The International Union of Railways, generally known as UIC, separately records infrastructure, passenger traffic, freight traffic, train movements, and rolling stock. Its statistical framework provides a useful starting point for keeping these subjects distinct. s1
The Iranian railway story also has a substantial heritage dimension. UNESCO’s account of the Trans-Iranian Railway describes a historic line joining the Caspian Sea and Persian Gulf through markedly different landscapes. Its construction began in 1927 and finished in 1938. That historic corridor is an important part of Iran’s railway geography, but its dimensions should not be used as the size of the entire contemporary network. s2
[s1] [s2]What infrastructure and traffic statistics explain
Infrastructure statistics describe the railway available for use; traffic statistics describe activity on it. UIC distinguishes the length of lines from the length of tracks and reports passenger-kilometres and tonne-kilometres alongside other measures. A route with additional parallel tracks therefore requires a different interpretation from a newly connected destination. Likewise, the number of passenger journeys and the distance those passengers travel answer different questions. s1
Comparisons need particular care when the reporting organization or its activities change. UIC explicitly identifies corporate restructuring, subsidiaries, privatization, and differences in business scope as challenges for consistent railway statistics. An apparent national trend should therefore be checked against the coverage of the contributing railway companies before it is explained as a change in travel demand or infrastructure provision. s1
[s1]Passenger services are more specific than a line on a map
Passenger experience depends on the particular train and service offered. Fadak’s official website, for example, describes compartment accommodation, sleeping facilities, entertainment, and catering. These descriptions establish what this operator advertises; they are not independent measurements of comfort, punctuality, or customer satisfaction. They also should not be generalized to every Iranian passenger train. The undated website was inspected after this page’s research cutoff, so its exact offerings on the cutoff date remain unconfirmed. s3
A useful account of rail transport consequently needs both physical and operational evidence. A railway map can explain connections, while dated service information establishes which passenger journeys are actually offered. Performance data are needed for conclusions about reliability or effectiveness. This page currently provides the conceptual distinctions and historical foundation; a complete contemporary synthesis still requires verified operating and traffic evidence.

limitations
- This is a supported introductory draft rather than a complete survey of contemporary Iranian rail transport.
- Sources were accessed on 2026-10-28, after the requested cutoff of 2026-10-26.
- Undated operator descriptions do not establish the exact services available on the cutoff date.
- Operator marketing does not independently establish service quality.
unverified items
- The complete division of infrastructure, regulatory, passenger, and freight responsibilities as of the cutoff date.
- The extent and operating status of the contemporary national and urban railway systems.
- Independent evidence on reliability, accessibility, safety performance, and modal share.
data gaps
- The default annual research window is 2012–2026; no comparable annual series was extracted and validated for publication.
- The World Bank passenger-kilometre page was inspected, but annual values were not exposed in the retrieved page and the attempted API request was inaccessible.
- The UIC June 2026 synopsis was inspected, but several numerical cells were incompletely represented in extracted text; ambiguous values were not transcribed.
