Intercity Trains

Intercity passenger rail is best understood through specific train services, accommodation, stopping patterns, and ticket conditions. Inspected operator documentation illustrates these distinctions, while leaving nationwide service coverage and performance unresolved.

Read the service, not just the destination

A city pair alone does not describe a passenger train. Accommodation, stopping pattern, catering, and ticket conditions also matter. Fadak’s official purchase guide illustrates this distinction: it directs users to separate information about train facilities, intermediate stations, and refund conditions within the booking results. This is evidence about the operator’s documented booking process, not a nationwide standard for every railway company. s1

The guide also distinguishes an ordinary compartment booking from reserving a whole compartment. For an international reader, the useful point is that a place on a train and exclusive use of a compartment are different products. The exact arrangement must be established from the selected service rather than inferred from the general appearance of a train. s1

[s1]

Accommodation and advertised amenities

Fadak describes its trains in terms of compartment accommodation, beds, bedding, entertainment, internet access, and onboard hospitality. Its detailed introduction also describes compartment air conditioning and catering tables. These are operator descriptions of the product being sold. They do not independently establish that every amenity is available on every departure or that passengers consistently receive the advertised experience. [s2, s3]

The same distinction applies to bundled travel. Fadak describes packages combining rail tickets with hotels and, in some cases, transfers or other destination services. A transfer included in a particular package should not be treated as an automatic feature of a standalone rail ticket. s3

These undated pages were inspected after the requested cutoff. Their descriptions are useful evidence of what the website presented at inspection, but they cannot alone establish the precise product available on 26 October 2026.

Advertised routes and dated availability

Fadak’s homepage presents Tehran–Mashhad and connections involving Rasht among its prominent routes. These examples demonstrate that its passenger offering is described through named city pairs; they are not a complete inventory of Iranian intercity trains. Nor does a prominent route listing establish daily frequency or a seat available on a particular date. s2

The operator’s documented booking sequence begins with origin, destination, dates, passenger details, and accommodation choices, followed by available results and service information. It then proceeds through passenger identification, review, and payment. This sequence explains why a general route description and a dated reservation answer different questions. s1

What remains to be established

A national comparison needs more than amenities and route advertising. It requires dated timetables, a verified operator inventory, and evidence about accessibility, reliability, and passenger volumes. None of those outcomes can be inferred from the marketing descriptions inspected here. This draft therefore explains how to interpret service information while leaving comparative judgments and current travel arrangements unresolved.

limitations

  • Accessible primary passenger-service evidence was concentrated on Fadak and is not representative of all Iranian intercity trains.
  • The Raja website returned HTTP 403 and was not used to support claims.
  • Undated operator pages accessed on 2026-10-28 cannot establish their exact contents or service offerings on the cutoff date.
  • No reservation or payment was attempted; documentation was inspected without testing the booking workflow.
  • Amenities and package descriptions are attributed operator claims, not independently verified outcomes.

unverified items

  • A complete operator and accommodation inventory as of 2026-10-26.
  • Dated national timetables, service frequencies, journey times, and international passenger operations.
  • Foreign-passport booking procedures, payment eligibility, accessibility provisions, and applicable ticket conditions.
  • Independent punctuality, cancellation, and passenger-experience evidence.

data gaps

  • No comparable annual intercity passenger series for 2012–2026 was validated.
  • No inspected dataset established a consistent separation of intercity passengers from other passenger rail categories.
  • Advertised amenities are qualitative product features and have not been converted into numerical quality scores.

coverage period

Undated operator documentation inspected on 2026-10-28; exact availability at the 2026-10-26 cutoff remains unverified
