Research cutoff: · Updated:A gateway with distinct port complexes
Bandar Abbas should be understood as a maritime gateway rather than a single terminal. An Economic Cooperation Organization presentation distinguishes the newer Shahid Rajaee complex from the older Shahid Bahonar port. This matters when reading reports: a figure attributed simply to Bandar Abbas may have a different geographic scope from one explicitly covering Shahid Rajaee. Neither name should automatically be substituted for the other. s1
Shahid Rajaee lies west of the city, near the Strait of Hormuz. Asia Marine Crown, a shipping agency, describes terminals for containers, general cargo, minerals, petrochemical products and fuel-related activities. Containers are standardized freight boxes transferred between ships and inland transport; general cargo includes goods handled outside those standardized units. The range of terminal functions means the complex cannot be understood solely through container traffic. s2
[s1] [s2]The inland connection
The port's significance extends beyond the waterfront. The Economic Cooperation Organization places Bandar Abbas within its work on connections between Central Asia and maritime gateways. Its presentation records a demonstration container train from Bandar Abbas to Almaty on 17 October 2011, while also describing continuing work on timetables, tariffs and cargo mobilization. A demonstration establishes that a movement occurred; it does not establish a continuously available scheduled service. s1
The shipping-agency profile also describes railway connections and the port's relationship to the International North–South Transport Corridor, a framework for freight movement across several countries and transport modes. Its lists of investment priorities include logistics terminals and storage facilities. These are useful evidence of proposed development directions, but they do not establish that each listed facility was subsequently completed. s2
[s1] [s2]Disruption and the limits of a facility profile
A major explosion struck Shahid Rajaee on 26 April 2025. Le Monde reported continuing fire and damage affecting people in the surrounding city. Its contemporary account also reported official statements that other docks remained operational. Those statements describe the immediate response, rather than independently verified recovery across the complex. This page does not assign a definitive cause or reproduce an evolving casualty total. s3
Published berth specifications likewise need careful interpretation. The shipping-agency profile explicitly makes vessel acceptance subject to hydrographic reassessment and port approval. Its introductory berth count also differs from the numbering in its detailed table. Consequently, its technical figures are not reproduced here as a current inventory. The useful distinction is between a documented facility description and verified operating availability on a particular date. s2

limitations
- The institutional presentation describes historical connections, and the shipping-agency profile has no publication date.
- Live research was conducted after the editorial cutoff; undated profiles cannot establish their exact state on 26 October 2026.
- The Ports and Maritime Organization annual-report endpoint timed out during inspection.
unverified items
- Operating availability, service schedules and disruption conditions as of the editorial cutoff.
- Final investigation findings and long-term recovery following the April 2025 explosion.
- Completion dates and operating status of the facilities listed as investment priorities.
data gaps
- No comparable port-level annual throughput series for 2012–2026 was inspected. Capacity claims and isolated historical observations were not substituted for annual cargo handled.
coverage period
Selected historical connectivity evidence from 2011–2018 and the April 2025 explosion; operating conditions at the October 2026 cutoff remain unverified.
