Wrestling Competitions

Wrestling competitions connected with Iran include international tournaments, domestic championships and events used in national-team selection. Understanding them requires distinguishing wrestling styles, weight categories and individual results from team standings.

Begin with the style

A wrestling result becomes meaningful only when its style and weight category are clear. United World Wrestling, the international governing body, distinguishes men’s freestyle, Greco-Roman and women’s wrestling within the Olympic programme. In freestyle, leg attacks and the active use of the legs are permitted. Greco-Roman places the contest around upper-body techniques and prohibits active leg use. A title in one style therefore cannot be treated as the same competitive achievement as a title in another. s1

World and continental championships also have a different weight-category programme from the Olympics. UWW lists ten categories per style for the former and six per style for the latter. This is one reason an athlete’s world-championship category may not appear on an Olympic schedule. Competition names, age groups and categories should accompany results rather than being stripped away in a general medal count. s1

The Takhti Cup and selection competition

The Takhti Cup illustrates how an event held in Iran can have both international participation and domestic selection significance. Nour News reported that the freestyle edition held in Esfahan on 8–9 May 2025 was an international tournament and a selection event for national teams. It was named after Gholamreza Takhti, the Iranian wrestler commemorated by the competition. s2

The report placed Iran first in the team standings, followed by Kyrgyzstan and Armenia. Those standings describe the tournament’s collective outcome; they do not identify every individual weight-category winner. Likewise, describing a competition as a selection event does not establish that every champion automatically receives a place at a subsequent world championship. That stronger claim would require the applicable selection policy and its category-specific conditions. s2

Why a defeated wrestler can still win bronze

Repechage is a second route into medal contention for eligible wrestlers who have lost. UWW’s September 2026 explanation states that, in brackets with at least eight wrestlers, athletes defeated by either finalist enter the relevant repechage pathway. Earlier-round losers progress through additional bouts, while semifinal losers enter the bronze-medal bouts directly. Two bronze medals are awarded. s3

This makes the identity of an opponent important after a defeat. An early loss does not necessarily end a wrestler’s tournament, but another chance depends on the opponent reaching the final. Repechage is therefore a defined bracket mechanism, rather than a general second opportunity for everyone who loses. The diagram shows the principle for the bracket size described by UWW, not an independently verified format for every Iranian domestic event. s3

For brackets with at least eight wrestlers under the described UWW system, eligible earlier-round losers reach a bronze-medal bout through repechage. Semifinal losers enter those medal bouts directly; the same principle operates in both halves of the draw.

Women’s competitions require precise labels

Women’s belt wrestling and grappling are documented parts of Iran’s competition history. UWW reported national championship and team-selection events at Tehran’s Azadi Sport Complex in February 2016. Tehran led the belt-wrestling team classification, while Kermanshah led the grappling classification. s4

These were different disciplines from Olympic women’s freestyle. Their existence should be recorded accurately without relabelling them as an Olympic-style championship or assuming that the same programme continues unchanged. The historical report demonstrates a wider competition landscape, while leaving the current calendar and participation conditions to be verified separately. s1s4
