Volleyball Leagues

Iran’s domestic volleyball competitions include separate men’s and women’s club leagues, with national titles decided through season-specific competition formats. Results from Sirjan, Yazd, Tehran and other cities illustrate a club landscape that extends beyond the capital.

A competition landscape beyond Tehran

Iran’s volleyball leagues are competitions between clubs, rather than between national teams. Reports from the Asian Volleyball Confederation, the continental governing body, identify distinct men’s and women’s domestic competitions. Their results also reveal a geographically varied sporting landscape: the men’s championship decided in 2024 paired Foolad Sirjan with Shahdab Yazd, while the women’s championship completed in January 2021 placed Tehran Saipa ahead of Esfahan Zob Ahan. These are separate competitions with their own histories and standings. s1s2

The men’s final standings for 2023–24 provide a useful introduction to that geography. Behind Foolad Sirjan and Shahdab Yazd, Paykan and Urmia shared third place. The published list also included clubs associated with Ardakan, Gorgan, Ramsar, Rafsanjan and Gonbad. A championship table therefore offers more than a ranking: it gives international readers a starting map of the cities represented in that particular season. It should not be treated as a permanent membership list. s1

Reading a championship result

Foolad Sirjan won the 2023–24 men’s Super League against Shahdab Yazd, ending the latter’s run of consecutive championships. The AVC account describes a best-of-three final, in which a club needed two match victories to secure the title. Its report also identifies Behrouz Ataei as Sirjan’s coach and Seyed Mohammad Mousavi as the season’s best player. These details connect a club result with the coaches and players who produced it. s1

Match scores require particular care. Two AVC reports agree on the champion, opponent and series outcome but describe the individual final scores differently. The title result is retained here; the disputed score sequence is not reproduced. A reader looking for match-level statistics should consult the original official match sheets before using either narrative account as a definitive record. s1s3

Women’s leagues have their own sporting history

The women’s competition deserves attention as a distinct championship. In January 2021, the AVC reported Saipa’s first title, with Zob Ahan second, Paykan third and Qazvin Shahrdari fourth. Mona Ashofteh received the most valuable player award. These results identify both a winning club and a wider field of competitors rather than reducing women’s volleyball to a footnote to the men’s game. s2

A later FIVB report, published in March 2025, identified Saipa as women’s national champion for the third time. That establishes another dated milestone, but it does not by itself supply a complete intervening season archive. The distinction matters: selected title reports can explain particular achievements, while a reliable long-term history needs a season-by-season record with consistent naming and coverage. s4

Domestic and continental achievements

An Iranian league championship and an Asian club championship are different honours. In September 2024, Foolad Sirjan defeated Shahdab Yazd in the Asian men’s club final in Yazd, repeating the pairing from the domestic final in a separate tournament. The example shows why every result should identify the competition as well as the clubs: the same opponents can meet for different titles in the same year. It also demonstrates the value of following individual clubs beyond their domestic season. s5
