Steel

Iran is a major steel producer with a substantial direct-reduced iron industry. Understanding its steel sector requires distinguishing ironmaking, crude steel production, and the rolling and finishing of steel products.

An industry with several distinct stages

Iran’s steel industry is internationally significant: the World Steel Association places the country among the leading crude steel producers. Its industrial importance extends upstream into ironmaking and downstream into products used in construction and manufacturing. These stages belong to a connected production system, but their output figures describe different materials and should not be added together. s1s3

Steel is an iron-based alloy whose composition and processing determine its properties. It appears in structures, vehicles, machinery and household equipment. A national steel-production total therefore describes the scale of an industrial material, rather than a single standardized finished product. It does not reveal the mix of grades or the suitability of particular mills for demanding applications. s4

Why direct-reduced iron matters

Direct-reduced iron, or DRI, is an ironmaking product used as a metallic input for steelmaking. Iran’s substantial DRI production makes this intermediate material particularly useful for understanding the country’s industrial chain. Worldsteel’s production-by-process table also identifies electric furnaces as the dominant steelmaking route in Iran. s1

An electric arc furnace melts metallic feedstock using electricity and supplementary fuel. Its charge can include scrap, DRI and pig iron; the furnace itself is not equivalent to an ironmaking plant. The alternative integrated route produces molten iron in a blast furnace and converts it into steel in a basic oxygen furnace. These distinctions explain why electricity supply, metallic feedstock and upstream iron production all matter when assessing a steelworks. s2

Iran’s direct-reduced iron production, 2021–2025Reported DRI production increased in every year of this five-year series. DRI is an intermediate iron product; this trend is not a measure of finished steel output or domestic steel consumption. [s1]

Data, units and methodology

Values transcribed from the Iran row of World Steel in Figures 2026, Direct reduced iron production 2021 to 2025. Stored in million metric tonnes at the source’s displayed precision. This is intermediate iron output, not crude steel, finished steel, capacity or consumption.

Reporting periodDirect-reduced iron production (metric tonnes; ×1000000)
202130.4 observed — Not marked as estimated in the inspected table.[s1]
202232.9 observed — Not marked as estimated in the inspected table.[s1]
202333.4 observed — Not marked as estimated in the inspected table.[s1]
202434.3 observed — Not marked as estimated in the inspected table.[s1]

The inspected table provides five annual observations rather than the full default 2012–2026 research window.

Values are rounded to one decimal place in million metric tonnes.

Production totals do not measure capacity utilization, profitability, product quality or environmental performance.

No full-year 2026 observation is included.

From crude steel to useful products

After steelmaking, casting produces intermediate shapes such as slabs, billets and blooms. Rolling then transforms them into flat products, including plate and coils, or long products such as reinforcing bar, wire rod and structural sections. Further operations can include cold rolling, coating and painting. s3

The distinction is practical when reading Iranian industry announcements. A new rolling line changes downstream processing capability; it does not necessarily create additional crude steel. Similarly, more DRI capacity does not establish how much steel a furnace actually produced. Installed capacity, actual output and finished-product shipments answer different questions. The production stages provide the framework for keeping those measures separate. s1s2s3

Assessing performance beyond tonnage

Electric furnace production should not automatically be described as low-carbon steel. Its environmental performance depends partly on the electricity used and on how metallic inputs were produced. DRI and pig iron carry upstream emissions, while alloy additions can introduce further impacts. A plant-level assessment therefore needs evidence about the full production route. s2

For readers comparing Iran with other producers, the most useful starting point is to identify the stage being measured. DRI output describes ironmaking, crude steel describes steelmaking, and rolled products describe subsequent transformation. Keeping those boundaries visible makes both industrial expansion claims and environmental comparisons more meaningful. s1s2s3

limitations

  • Sources were inspected on 2026-10-28 for an editorial cutoff of 2026-10-26; undated live pages do not provide an archived cutoff-date snapshot.
  • This account does not establish current operating conditions at individual Iranian steelworks.
  • Technical industry sources explain processes but do not independently verify environmental performance.

data gaps

  • A consistent 2012–2026 annual series was not established.
  • The annual dataset covers DRI rather than crude steel or finished products.
  • Comparable plant-level energy, water and emissions series were not verified.
