Registered Technologies

Technology records can document different things, including intellectual property rights and product certification. Iran’s nanotechnology assessment framework provides a documented example of technical evaluation that must be distinguished from patent protection.

What does registration establish?

The phrase “registered technology” needs an accompanying definition. A patent record and a product certificate answer different questions: the former concerns protection of an invention, while the latter may assess specified technical characteristics. WIPO describes patents as territorial rights granted for inventions. Iran’s nanotechnology authority describes a separate assessment system concerned with nanoscale components and the properties arising from them. s1s2

This page therefore uses nanotechnology certification as a documented example, rather than treating it as a comprehensive register of Iranian technological achievement. The inspected evidence does not establish a single national register covering every technology sector. Nor does it establish a common unit that would allow patents, certified products, and other technology records to be added together.

A documented product-assessment framework

The Iran Nanotechnology and Microtechnology Development Council publishes a product-evaluation procedure for companies and manufacturing workshops seeking nanoscale certification. Its stated purpose is to identify nanotechnology products and provide information to consumers. The procedure covers applicants working at laboratory and industrial scales; that distinction matters because a laboratory-stage product should not automatically be described as established industrial production. s3

The procedure defines a nanotechnology product broadly enough to include goods and services. It assigns the assessment and monitoring group responsibilities including checking applicants’ legal documentation, reviewing initial technical information and relevant standards, and appointing technical experts and inspectors. These are documented responsibilities within the assessment framework, rather than independent findings about how effectively each application is handled. s3

Certification and the national nano mark

The council’s overview distinguishes nanoscale certification from a national nano mark, called Nanonamad in Persian. It describes the earlier certificate as an initial certification mechanism and explains that a national mark was subsequently proposed to Iran’s national standards organization. s2

According to that overview, provincial standards directorates implement the nano-mark instruction, while a specialist committee based at the council serves as its technical reference. This division of roles is more informative than an undifferentiated statement that a product is “registered”: it identifies which system is being discussed and which bodies have implementation and technical responsibilities. The overview alone does not establish that any particular product currently holds either credential. s2

From a record to a defensible achievement claim

For an international reader, a useful account should identify the product or process, the issuing organization, the kind of record, and the technical claim actually assessed. In the documented nanoscale framework, the central question concerns nanoscale characteristics and associated properties. A separate claim about sales, exports, production capacity, safety approval, or adoption would require evidence addressing that specific subject. s2s3

Patent protection remains a different question. WIPO explains that patents disclose inventions and provide rights within particular territories; they can also be licensed. A certification record should therefore not be presented as proof that the producer owns an exclusive invention, while a patent should not substitute for evidence that a product meets a certification scheme’s requirements. s1

A broader account of registered technologies in Iran requires verified records from additional sectors and a clear explanation of each register’s purpose. Until those records are inspected, sector-specific findings should retain their sector-specific labels.

limitations

  • The supported draft is limited to distinctions between patents and a documented nanotechnology assessment framework.
  • Institutional procedures establish stated responsibilities, not independently verified implementation outcomes.
  • Research occurred on 2026-10-27; live documentation was not independently archived as of the 2026-10-26 cutoff.

unverified items

  • The intended scope of registered technologies beyond the documented nanotechnology example remains unresolved.
  • No individual product’s current certificate, certificate identifier, validity period, or commercial deployment was verified.
  • The detailed nano-mark committee instruction could not be retrieved; the account uses only the accessible official overview.

data gaps

  • No comparable annual series of newly certified products or active certificates was established.
  • No national cross-sector total is supplied because a consistent register definition and deduplicated records were not inspected.
  • No numerical series is appropriate until laboratory products, industrial products, renewals, and active records can be distinguished.
