Patent Registration

Patent registration connects technical disclosure with territorial intellectual property rights. Understanding Iran’s patent activity requires separating applications, grants, international filing procedures, and evidence of commercial use.

What a patent establishes

A patent is an exclusive right granted for an invention in exchange for disclosure of technical information. It concerns a defined technical solution, rather than recognition for scientific achievement in general. WIPO, the World Intellectual Property Organization, explains that common patentability requirements include novelty, an inventive step, industrial applicability, and sufficiently clear disclosure. The precise legal requirements depend on the jurisdiction. s1

These distinctions matter when reading accounts of Iranian research. A patent application records a request for protection; a grant records a different administrative outcome. Neither should automatically be described as a commercially successful technology. Patent rights can be licensed or transferred, but a claim that an invention has reached production needs evidence beyond the patent document itself. s1

Reading Iran’s filing record

The series below counts applications attributed to applicants residing in Iran, combining resident and abroad filings. It therefore measures filing activity by origin, rather than applications received exclusively by Iran’s patent office. The distinction prevents foreign applicants filing in Iran from being confused with Iranian applicants filing overseas. s3

The available observations show a decline followed by a small rebound and another decline. They do not identify the causes, the commercial value of inventions, or the quality of examination. Applications and grants also belong to different administrative stages; comparing their totals in a single year would not establish the success rate of that year’s applicants. s3

Patent applications attributed to applicants residing in IranApplications declined from 2020 through 2022, rose in 2023, and declined again in 2024. The final observation remained below the start of this five-year window.

Data, units and methodology

Counts transcribed from the Resident and Abroad patent applications chart in WIPO’s 2024 statistical country profile, whose source note reports a June 2026 database update. These are applications by origin, not grants, unique inventions, or total filings at the Iranian office. The five-year extract avoids the unexplained discontinuity visible at the beginning of the profile’s longer chart.

The profile does not identify individual observations as estimated, provisional, or revised; observed means published counts without an explicit qualification.

The requested default research window is 2012–2026; this extract covers only 2020–2024.

The inspected profile provides no 2025 or 2026 observations.

Applications are not a measure of commercial adoption, patent quality, or unique inventions.

International filing is not a worldwide grant

Patent rights are territorial. An Iranian patent does not automatically establish rights in other countries, and WIPO does not issue a universal world patent. s1

The Patent Cooperation Treaty, usually abbreviated PCT, provides an international application procedure. Its international stage includes filing, search, and publication; applicants subsequently pursue protection before the relevant national or regional offices. Those offices retain responsibility for granting patents. Consequently, an announcement of a PCT application should be described as a filing milestone, rather than an internationally granted patent. s4

For readers assessing an achievement, the useful questions are therefore specific: what document exists, which applicant and invention does it identify, which territory does it concern, and is it an application or a granted right? Evidence of licensing, manufacturing, or adoption answers a further question about what happened after protection was sought. s1s4

  • Research was conducted on 2026-10-27 for a 2026-10-26 editorial cutoff; live pages were not independently archived as of the cutoff.
  • The legal discussion relies on inspected WIPO Lex metadata, not an article-by-article analysis of the Persian statute.
  • No claims are made about actual examination quality, enforcement effectiveness, or commercialization rates.

unverified items

  • Current operational filing procedures, fees, and implementing arrangements under the later law were not verified.

data gaps

  • A complete comparable 2012–2026 annual series was not established.
