Research cutoff: · Updated:An aluminum resource preserved in ancient landscapes
Bauxite is the principal raw material refined into alumina, or aluminum oxide, before a separate smelting process produces aluminum metal. These are distinct materials and industrial stages: an ore deposit is not a stock of finished metal, and its mined tonnage cannot be read as aluminum output. s3
Jajarm, in northeastern Iran, illustrates why the geology matters. A published petrographic and geochemical study describes bauxite occupying karst features in the Triassic Elika Formation beneath the Jurassic Shemshak Formation. Karst refers to cavities and irregular surfaces developed through dissolution of soluble rock. Here, these features provided spaces in which aluminum-rich material accumulated and was subsequently altered. The authors interpret the deposit as having a mixed contribution from igneous and sedimentary source materials. This is an interpretation of geological evidence, rather than a directly observed account of ancient formation. s2
[s2] [s3]Why different layers are not equivalent
The Jajarm study distinguishes clay-rich material, bauxitic clay, a red bauxite horizon, and an upper kaolinitic layer. Diaspore, an aluminum-bearing mineral, occurs alongside minerals such as kaolinite, hematite, and anatase. Their varying proportions mean that apparently similar reddish rocks need not have the same composition. The study also identifies evidence of alteration after the original material formed. s2
This layered character offers a useful way to understand mineral-resource reporting. Naming a deposit establishes a location and geological occurrence; it does not establish that every part is equally suitable for processing. A current mine plan, resource classification, and refinery feed specification would be needed to connect geological descriptions to recoverable commercial output. Those documents have not been verified for this page.
[s2]Reading the production record
The inspected USGS production table provides the bauxite observations below. Output fell and then recovered within this series, ending below its opening value. These are national gross-weight ore figures, not contained aluminum, reserves, or refinery capacity. s1

Data, units and methodology
Transcribed from the USGS production table's Bauxite row under the original Gregorian year headings. The table specifies metric tons, gross weight, and identifies unmarked observations as reported. Observed here means reported rather than independently measured by this editor. Gregorian period boundaries are left null because the displayed table does not document the underlying producers' accounting-period alignment. No calendar conversion or adjustment was performed.
| Reporting period | Bauxite production (metric tonnes, gross weight) |
|---|---|
| 2020 | 846,452 observed — Reported; no estimate marker.[s1] |
| 2021 | 689,149 observed — Reported; no estimate marker.[s1] |
| 2022 | 571,680 observed — Reported; no estimate marker.[s1] |
| 2023 | 598,599 observed — Reported; no estimate marker.[s1] |
| 2024 | 796,540 observed — Reported; no estimate marker.[s1] |
Gross-weight ore production does not measure contained aluminum or recoverable alumina.
Underlying reporting-period alignment is not documented in the displayed table.
Earlier editions were located, but their revisions and comparability were not reconciled into this series.
Following the material beyond the mine
In the Bayer refining process, ground bauxite is treated with hot caustic solution to dissolve its aluminum-bearing constituents. Undissolved material is separated, aluminum hydroxide is precipitated, and heating produces alumina. The process recirculates caustic solution, while the separated residue requires its own storage and management. These general steps explain the industrial relationship; they do not document the operating configuration or environmental performance of a particular Iranian refinery. s4
The International Aluminium Institute calls the remaining mixture of minerals and process liquor bauxite residue, often known as red mud. Its management is therefore part of the material's industrial story, alongside extraction and metal production. A balanced account of Iranian bauxite should follow both the useful aluminum-bearing stream and the residual material, while keeping verified geology separate from unverified claims about current operations. s3
