Research cutoff: · Updated:From hydrocarbons to manufacturing inputs
Petrochemicals connect Iran’s hydrocarbon resources with chemical and materials manufacturing. The crucial distinction is between using a hydrocarbon as fuel and using it as feedstock: a raw material transformed into another product. The U.S. Energy Information Administration identifies petroleum products and natural gas as feedstocks used by Iran’s petrochemical production. s1
An individual plant makes the relationship easier to understand. Arya Sasol’s technical catalogue describes an ethane cracker producing ethylene, a chemical intermediate supplied to its polyethylene units and other destinations. Ethylene and polyethylene are therefore different stages of a connected chain. Adding their reported production together would not automatically measure material available for final sale. The catalogue documents the production arrangement, but does not establish current throughput. s2

The arrows describe material movements documented in the Arya Sasol catalogue. They do not represent ownership, measured flows, or verified operating conditions at the editorial cutoff.
[s2]Capacity is not output
Nameplate capacity describes what installed equipment is designed to produce under specified conditions. Actual production depends on whether the equipment receives feedstock and can operate. S&P Global’s 2025 reporting, citing Iran’s petrochemical leadership, identifies feedstock shortages as a reason for unused capacity. Its account also links expansion ambitions to substantial financing requirements. Announced projects should consequently be distinguished from completed and operating facilities. s3
Iran Open Data’s August 2026 analysis reports lower production in Solar Hijri year 1403 than in 1402, even as installed capacity increased. It also distinguishes total production from marketable products. These are materially different concepts: gross industrial throughput and products available for sale should not be silently substituted for one another. The short dataset below preserves that analysis’s rounded production figures as attributed estimates rather than treating them as a reconciled official series. s4
[s3] [s4]| Reporting period | Reported petrochemical production (metric tonnes; ×1000000) |
|---|---|
| 1402 | 71 estimated — Rounded value reported by the secondary analysis; estimated denotes source approximation, not an author calculation.[s4] |
| 1403 | 67 estimated — Rounded value reported by the secondary analysis; comparability requires confirmation against the underlying statistical tables.[s4] |
Energy dependence and recent disruption
Gas availability is a system-wide issue. The EIA’s 2024 assessment describes seasonal demand and insufficient storage, helping explain why abundant underground resources do not guarantee uninterrupted industrial deliveries. Feedstock and energy supply must be considered alongside installed machinery when assessing production potential. s1
The operating picture also changed during 2026. Associated Press reported attacks on the South Pars-associated petrochemical area in April. That reporting establishes a serious disruption context; it does not provide a verified plant-by-plant recovery inventory for October. Claims about the proportion of capacity disabled should not be adopted from belligerents’ statements without independent verification. s5
Iran’s petrochemical sector should therefore be evaluated through separate questions about feedstock security, usable capacity, actual output, and downstream demand. A current assessment additionally requires verified evidence of damage, repairs, and resumed operations. This page retains the documented industrial relationships while leaving that operational assessment open. s1s3s5

limitations
- The dataset preserves an inspected secondary analysis rather than claiming verification of its underlying primary tables.
- Technical catalogue evidence describes production relationships, not current plant availability.
- The live S&P page exposed limited article material; only its accessible reporting on constraints and investment was used.
- Sources were accessed after the editorial cutoff; mutable pages were not inspected as archived cutoff-date snapshots.
unverified items
- Comparable definitions and revisions underlying conflicting recent national production totals.
- Plant-by-plant damage, repairs, and operating status as of 2026-10-26.
- Current export volumes and restrictions at the editorial cutoff.
data gaps
- A consistent 2012–2026 annual production series was not verified.
- The retained series contains only two Solar Hijri years and must not be interpreted as a complete trend.
- No independently reconciled annual series for marketable output, feedstock interruptions, or capacity utilization was obtained.
coverage period
2024 energy assessment, 2025 constraint reporting, Solar Hijri production years 1402–1403, and reporting published through August 2026.
