Research cutoff: · Updated:Different ways to encounter a periodical
Digital magazines appear in more than one kind of publishing environment. Fidibo includes a magazine category alongside books and audio. Taaghche’s press navigation distinguishes newspapers, specialist magazines, general magazines, and foreign periodicals. These catalogue labels show how services organize discovery, but they do not establish that every listed title has the same format, archive depth, or access conditions. s1s2
An article database offers a different perspective. Magiran, an Iranian periodicals database, groups its coverage into scholarly, specialist, and general publications. Its coverage guide says it indexes Iranian publications holding publication permits from the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance. It also identifies exclusions, including local and student publications. Magiran is therefore a useful documented example of periodical discovery, but its holdings should not be treated as a complete census of everything published digitally in Iran. s3
[s1] [s2] [s3]An index entry is not a full-text guarantee
Magiran separates public discovery from access to documents. Its membership guide describes openly accessible lists, searches, and article titles; free registration adds personal lists and notification features. Downloading available article texts is a separate subscription service. Crucially, some publications permit their contents to be listed without supplying or authorizing electronic full text. A search result can therefore establish that an article exists without making that article readable through the database. s4
Its frequently asked questions reinforce that distinction. Articles are supplied individually rather than as a single bulk download of a publication. The help page also explains that entries without a text-access button may contain bibliographic information only. For a reader tracing a subject through successive issues, finding the publication, finding a particular article, and obtaining its text are separate steps. s5
[s4] [s5]Reading archives with their limits in view
Magiran’s search guidance allows discovery by Persian or English publication name, abbreviation, or ISSN, the international identifier used for serial publications. Its listings also distinguish publications whose publication has stopped. These features are helpful when similar titles or discontinued magazines complicate a search. They do not, by themselves, demonstrate that every historical issue has been digitized. s3
Access also carries limits on reuse. Magiran says downloading a document does not confer ownership or permission to republish it elsewhere. Its institutional-access arrangements identify users through participating organizations’ networks, making organizational access different from an individual account. s4
The central lesson is to read the archive’s coverage and access statements alongside its search results. A digital listing can be valuable evidence of publication while remaining incomplete as a reading archive. The inspected documentation explains those boundaries clearly, but it cannot establish national magazine readership, digital circulation, or the survival rate of Iran’s periodical archives.
