Data Centers

Data centers house the computing, storage, and networking equipment behind digital services. In Iran, domestic hosting providers connect these facilities to telecommunications networks and the wider policy programme of localizing digital infrastructure.

The physical home of digital services

A data center is a physical facility containing the computing, storage, and networking infrastructure used to run applications and manage their data. Cloud services still depend on this physical equipment: the cloud changes how customers obtain computing resources, rather than removing the buildings and machines underneath them. IBM distinguishes facilities serving one organization from infrastructure operated by providers for multiple customers. s1

This distinction helps explain Iran’s hosting market. A company selling a website package, a virtual server, or cloud storage is describing a service. The underlying equipment may be housed in a facility it operates or in infrastructure supplied by another organization. A service brand and a physical data-center site should therefore be counted separately when describing the sector. s1

What provider descriptions establish

Asiatech, an Iranian telecommunications provider, states in its company profile that it has been certified to provide Internet Data Center services since 2013. Its listed services include web hosting, dedicated and shared servers, and colocation. Colocation means housing a customer’s equipment in a provider’s facility; purchasing server capacity instead gives the customer access to computing equipment supplied by the provider. Asiatech’s account establishes its stated service history, but is not an independent audit of operating capacity or reliability. s1s2

Hostiran offers another example of the relationship between hosting and connectivity. Its own profile describes a dedicated data center with fiber connectivity to the infrastructure network and lists hosting, virtual and dedicated servers, and cloud services. These statements identify the company’s advertised activities. Promotional claims about size or leadership are not treated here as verified market rankings. s3

A facility also needs routes to its users

Servers become useful to remote users through network connections. RIPE NCC’s regional research explains how data centers can provide the colocation environment in which network operators interconnect, including through Internet exchange points. An exchange point enables participating networks to exchange traffic; it is a different function from storing or processing that traffic. The report covers the Arabic-speaking Middle East, so its architectural explanation is used here without presenting its regional inventory as an Iranian census. s4

Iran-specific evidence illustrates this connection. The Internet Society’s August 2026 Tehran IX record lists Hostiran DC Network among the exchange’s participants. The record is based on self-reported PeeringDB information. It demonstrates a documented interconnection presence, not the number of Hostiran buildings, the amount of installed computing equipment, or measured traffic across all its services. s5

Reading the sector carefully

A credible account of Iran’s data centers must keep service offerings, physical sites, and network participation distinct. The inspected provider profiles offer concrete examples, but they do not form a complete national inventory. Nor do they provide comparable annual measurements of electricity capacity, occupied racks, or independently verified availability. The evidence supports describing an operating domestic hosting ecosystem; it does not support a precise national capacity total or a ranking of facilities. s2s3s5

limitations

  • Undated company profiles were accessed after the cutoff and are used as attributed service descriptions, not proof of an exact operating footprint on the cutoff date.
  • Company descriptions do not independently verify certification, uptime, facility capacity, or market rank.
  • The RIPE NCC report provides general architectural context; its geographic inventory does not cover Iran.

data gaps

  • No comprehensive national facility inventory or comparable annual capacity series was established for 2012–2026.
  • Independently audited utilization, energy consumption, and facility availability figures were not established.
  • The inspected sources do not support a systematic comparison of provincial hosting capacity.
