Research cutoff: · Updated:An economy connected through energy
Iran's economy extends beyond petroleum, but energy remains an important connection between domestic production and external earnings. The U.S. Energy Information Administration describes a relatively diversified economy in which petroleum exports nevertheless provide significant government revenue. Its assessment also identifies sanctions and underinvestment as constraints on the energy sector. Resource abundance therefore does not establish how much productive capacity is available or how easily export income can finance development. s1
Energy also enters the economy through domestic consumption. Natural gas and petroleum supplied almost all primary energy consumption in the EIA's assessment for 2022. That dependence connects the energy system to questions about industrial reliability and investment: the existence of reserves underground is different from the ability to deliver usable energy where it is needed. s1
[s1]Infrastructure and work
The World Bank's October 2025 assessment reported that water and energy shortages were disrupting economic activity. It connected water scarcity to drought, climate change, and resource management, and identified land subsidence as a threat to infrastructure and productivity. These are development constraints as well as environmental concerns. A useful industrial assessment must therefore ask about continuity of supply alongside installed capacity. s2
The same assessment identified services as the largest employer and described substantial barriers to translating economic activity into broad employment. This complicates a development story focused only on factories or export volumes. Work, access to infrastructure, and the resilience of everyday services belong in the assessment alongside production. The report's findings describe its research period; they do not independently establish conditions throughout 2026. s2
[s2]Reading the branches together
The directory's branches provide complementary routes through this subject. Macroeconomics supplies the framework for interpreting aggregate output. Oil and gas concerns a major source of export earnings and domestic energy. Transport, construction, employment, and regional development provide further questions for evaluating how production supports economic life.
The World Bank's Iran Economic Monitor treats macroeconomic developments, financial markets, and human welfare as connected subjects. Its publication archive also documents changing analytical priorities, including job creation, poverty, water security, and the effects of sanctions and the pandemic. That breadth is a useful guide to reading this section: growth needs to be examined alongside its sources, durability, and consequences for people. s3
This page is an introductory research draft. The evidence inspected supports the connections discussed here, but a publication-ready national survey still requires direct research into the individual industries and their regional distribution.

limitations
- This draft is shorter than the intended level-one treatment and does not yet substantiate every industrial branch.
- The inspected sector assessment dates from 2024 and the cross-sector assessment from October 2025; neither establishes the complete situation at the editorial cutoff.
- Sources were accessed after the editorial cutoff. Access dates are recorded separately from the research cutoff.
unverified items
- Current sector ownership structures and the respective roles of public, private, and other institutional enterprises.
- Regional industrial specialization, agricultural processing, automotive manufacturing, and small-business conditions.
- Developments between the inspected assessments and October 26, 2026.
data gaps
- No harmonized recent annual series covering the directory's industrial branches was verified. Numerical GDP observations are provided on the dedicated GDP page.
