Diagnostic Equipment Manufacturing

Published research documents Iranian development of specialized imaging equipment, including instruments for small-animal biomedical research. Procurement records also show that installation, maintenance, regulatory acceptance, and local technical support are integral to bringing diagnostic equipment into service. [s1][s2]

A documented example of imaging development

Iranian diagnostic-equipment development includes specialized instruments serving biomedical research. A paper published in 2014 evaluated HiReSPECT, a small-animal imaging system identified as a product of Parto Negar Persia in Tehran. The researchers obtained images of rat organs using radioactive tracers and assessed the instrument's ability to reveal physiological detail. Their affiliations included research centers in Bushehr and Tehran. s1

SPECT means single-photon emission computed tomography: detectors collect radiation emitted by a tracer, and software reconstructs its distribution. The study described both planar imaging and tomographic reconstruction. These are related imaging approaches, but a flat projection and a reconstructed volume provide different kinds of information. s1

The distinction between research instrumentation and clinical diagnosis matters. This was an evaluation in animals for biomedical research, not evidence of authorization for routine human scanning. It establishes a particular technical achievement; it does not establish national manufacturing capacity, current sales, or the domestic origin of every component. s1

Manufacturing extends beyond delivering a machine

A WHO invitation to bid for laboratory equipment and diagnostics for Iran in July 2020 illustrates the practical requirements surrounding equipment supply. Offers had to identify the manufacturer, country of origin, technical specifications, and warranty provisions. Brands without local agents for installation, training, and after-sales service were excluded; offered equipment also had to be acceptable to the Iranian Food and Drug Administration. s2

These requirements show why a manufacturing assessment should examine service capacity alongside the instrument itself. A supplier's ability to deliver a device and its ability to support use in a laboratory are separate questions. The tender is evidence of requirements for that procurement, however, rather than a complete statement of rules applying to every manufacturer or purchase in Iran. It also does not establish which bids succeeded or what equipment ultimately entered service. s2

Reading procurement announcements carefully

In November 2025, WHO published a request for information covering advanced medical imaging, radiation therapy, and treatment equipment for Iran. Its scope included delivery, installation, testing, commissioning, and maintenance. The notice explicitly described market research for planning purposes and stated that no contract would be awarded from the announcement. s3

This is evidence of procurement planning, not completed delivery. It cannot by itself establish either domestic manufacturing capability or dependence on imported equipment. A reliable account of the industry therefore needs product-level registration records, manufacturing-site evidence, and completed procurement or deployment documentation. Those materials remain necessary before drawing broader conclusions about the sector's scale or its geographical distribution.

limitations

  • The documented manufacturing example concerns preclinical imaging and cannot represent the entire diagnostic-equipment industry.
  • Procurement notices establish requirements and intentions, not contract awards, deliveries, or operational outcomes.
  • Research was conducted after the editorial cutoff; the cited dated documents were published before that cutoff.

unverified items

  • Current registered manufacturers and product authorizations across clinical imaging and laboratory instruments.
  • Domestic component content, manufacturing volumes, exports, and independently verified installation totals.
  • Regional manufacturing distribution and current service-network coverage.

data gaps

  • No comparable annual series for Iranian diagnostic-equipment manufacturing was established from the inspected sources; no production or market-share chart is supplied.
