Research cutoff: · Updated:Several fields connected by biology
Biotechnology uses biological systems or their components to develop products and processes. In the health branch of this guide, its scope includes biological medicines, diagnostic methods, and research into cells and tissue repair. An Iranian review published in 2012 described biopharmaceuticals, diagnosis, cell therapy, and regenerative medicine as areas of activity. That review supplies historical context, rather than a current inventory of products or institutions. s1
The branches overlap without being interchangeable. Genetic engineering changes biological material; genomics investigates genetic variation; molecular diagnostics applies biological measurements to diagnostic questions. A research result in one branch may support another, but a laboratory finding is not equivalent to a clinically validated product. The examples below illustrate different stages of this relationship. s1s2s3
[s1] [s2] [s3]Genomic diversity changes the research question
A population-genetics study published in 2019 examined variation among multiple Iranian ethnic groups using genome-wide data. Its findings demonstrated both substantial genetic overlap among several groups and differences that matter when designing association studies. The authors emphasized accounting for population structure: differences in ancestry can otherwise distort an apparent relationship between a genetic variant and a condition. s2
For international readers, this is a useful corrective to treating Iran as one uniform genetic population. National boundaries, language, ethnicity, and genetic ancestry describe different things. The study supports attention to diversity in research design; it does not justify assigning a fixed biological identity or a diagnosis to an individual from their ethnic label. Its participants also constitute a research sample, not a census of genetic variation throughout the country. s2
[s2]From a biological platform to a manufactured product
Vaccine technology transfer offers another window into the field. A comparative study published in 2024 examined transfer of the Cuban Soberana Plus protein-subunit vaccine to Iran, where it was named PastoCovac Plus. The authors described transfer at the formulation stage and assessed product characteristics and clinical measures before and after transfer. s3
This example shows why the phrase 'local production' needs a precise explanation. Formulation, manufacture of the active biological ingredient, quality testing, and clinical evaluation are distinguishable activities. Evidence for one stage should not be silently extended to every stage of a production chain. The reported comparison concerns a specified vaccine and transfer process, rather than all Iranian biological medicines. s3
[s3]Institutional names require care
The Pasteur name should not be read as proof of shared management or ongoing collaboration. In a statement dated April 2026, Institut Pasteur in Paris said that the Iranian institute had been independent since 1946 and that there was no ongoing scientific collaboration between the two institutions. The statement also expressed concern for researchers, students, and civilian employees potentially affected by strikes during the military conflict. It did not provide a facility-by-facility operational assessment. s4
A current account must therefore distinguish documented historical research from verified present capacity. This overview establishes selected connections between research, diversity, and production; further evidence is required for comprehensive coverage of stem-cell applications, regulation, access, and the sector's condition at the editorial cutoff.

limitations
- Coverage is selective and shorter than the intended full subfield overview.
- The technology-transfer source was inspected at abstract level; detailed unseen methods and findings are not represented.
- The historical review includes authors affiliated with biotechnology manufacturers and is not treated as independent proof of industry performance.
- Research was conducted on 2026-10-28 using dated publications preceding the editorial cutoff.
unverified items
- Current operational capacity and disruption across biotechnology institutions.
- Current regulatory pathways and independently documented access to biological medicines.
- Clinical translation and safety evidence across Iranian stem-cell and regenerative-medicine applications.
data gaps
- No consistently defined annual national biotechnology production, employment, or expenditure series was established.
- Publication counts, product approvals, manufacturing output, and patient access are different indicators and have not been combined into a synthetic measure.
coverage period
