Research cutoff: · Updated:What a provincial average measures
Population density relates a resident count to a defined area. To reproduce a provincial comparison, the population and area must refer to the same territory. A ranking by population alone cannot establish a ranking by density: large territories and compact territories have different denominators.
Iran’s historical statistics illustrate why the reference date belongs beside the measure. Syracuse University’s Iran Data Portal labels its national population table as the 1390 census, corresponding to 2011. Its provincial table also identifies the census source for population, while other columns draw on a later labor-force report. A shared webpage therefore does not necessarily mean that every indicator refers to the same year. s1
[s1]South Khorasan: why boundaries matter
South Khorasan is a useful case study because its administrative territory changed. Encyclopaedia Iranica records its creation from the former Khorasan province, followed by the addition of Ferdows and subsequently Tabas. These changes affect both the area denominator and the population included in the numerator. s2
The article also describes substantial differences between Birjand and Tabas at the subprovincial scale. This is the central limitation of a provincial mean: the result summarizes the whole territory while concealing how residents are clustered within it. A low provincial average does not mean that every neighborhood, village, or agricultural district is sparsely settled. s2
For a historical trend, use either populations recalculated onto a common set of boundaries or separate observations with explicit warnings about territorial changes. Without that reconciliation, an apparent change in density may partly reflect the transfer of territory rather than a change in settlement intensity.
[s2]How to build a defensible comparison
A publishable provincial table should identify the population reference date, whether the numerator is a census count or an estimate, the area source, and whether that area represents land alone or the full administrative territory. Record the unrounded inputs before calculating residents per square kilometer. These are editorial requirements for reproducibility, rather than a claim that all existing Iranian tables use one common convention.
Keep three questions separate: which provinces contain the most people, which have the highest average density, and where people concentrate inside each province. A provincial density table answers only the second. County-level figures and settlement maps are needed to investigate the third.
The inspected sources establish the importance of reporting dates and boundary reconciliation, but they do not provide a verified, complete, recent density comparison for every province. This page therefore withholds rankings and a comparative chart until matching population and area inputs can be inspected.

- This is a supported methodological introduction, not a completed provincial statistical profile.
- The South Khorasan passage was inspected through extracted search text; direct retrieval timed out.
- Access occurred after the editorial cutoff; historical evidence is not presented as a verified current ranking.
unverified items
- A complete official provincial density table available by the cutoff.
- Matching provincial population and area inputs, including their territorial and water-area definitions.
- Boundary-consistent historical provincial rankings.
data gaps
- No complete comparable provincial dataset was verified, so no density values or rankings are published.
- A comparable annual provincial density series for 2012–2026 remains unverified.
